New open access book: Citizen Participation in Local Governance

Exciting news!

The open access book Citizen Participation in Local Governance is now online. It provides a comparative and multidisciplinary analysis of public participation in local governance.

The book explores citizen participation in local governance with an urban-rural perspective. It covers topics like participatory budgeting, local development planning, digital participation, and the challenges and opportunities of engaging citizens in both urban and rural settings.

One of the chapters I co-authored looks at large-scale projects in Switzerland and how local interests are considered at various stages across multiple government levels (local, cantonal, federal). While decision-making remains with authorities, public participation in various forms can support bringing in new facts, clarity about varying views and positions of different stakeholders and hence allow for a more solid balancing of local, regional, and federal interests.
